Taking on macho male personas, Taryn Bennett and Helen Iskander use an unconventional and very funny comment on the construction of women in society. Bennett and Iskander become Raphael and George, two quirky brothers living peacefully on the Mediterranean Sea despite the war that surrounds them. cueTV gets the background to the show.

FENCES

Fences are a metaphor for the divisions that exist within our communities and demarcate barriers in which we hide ourselves. Fence delves into issues of domestic violence and violence against women. Director, Limba Vincent Shabanga, along with his cast wrote the heart-breaking script of a rebellious child, Faye, and her single mother. Fence comments on the state of a community and how many remain silent in difficult times where speaking out is the only way to deal with it. Market Theatre Laboratory’s entry to the 2012 Student Theatre Festival.

This Rhodes University production Tender deals with the experience of living in South Africa through a blend of singing, dancing, movement and multimedia. Directed by Madele Vermaak.

BIG GIRL

Big Girl is a solo work written and directed by Juliet Jenkin. It tells the story of Sylvia Smorkels, a giant of a woman seeking refuge in the Drakensburg. Police and armed forces are trying to arrest her for the murder of four violent men and the provocative stage action is her conversation with her apprehenders. This quirky character, played by Daneel van der Walt, delves into themes such as feminism, loneliness, violence and the environment.

What does it take to become a professional ballet dancer? cueTV goes behind the scenes of Giselle, performed by the Cape Town City Ballet in their production by Professor Elizabeth Triegaardt. We see how principal dancers Kim Vieira and Daniel Szybkowski get to be chosen for their lead roles. Professor Triegaardt describes the qualities she looks for when casting her dancers.

THE LUNCHBOX THEATRE

The Tree Show by The Lunchbox Theatre is a fun interactive show for children that promotes environmental awareness. We have a princess who will only get married to the man she loves if he plants a tree in her honour. When it is done, the bad guys of the story — the nasty builders arrive and spoil the natural environment. Through song and dance, children learn how important trees are and what they do for our environment. After the play is over, the cast take the children outside to plant a real tree and the tree even gets named!
